If you are a writer or have ever dreamed of being one, November is your month. It is the playoffs of writing. There are three different creative movements happening to inspire you and motivate you enough to take your writing seriously and seriously get writing. You’ll find time you didn’t know you had and feel the adrenaline rush as your word count climbs each day. Grab your pens and paper, your coffee and laptop and let’s get to it!

NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month

This is where it all started. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to write 50,000 words in a month. Does it sound hard? It wouldn’t be a challenge if it were easy. Divide the words by the days you have to write. Crank out word after word, sentence after sentence. Don’t worry about it being great. It probably won’t be. You aren’t submitting this draft to editors or publishing it at the end of the month. Just push yourself beyond what you thought was possible and see what you can accomplish.

Maybe you aren’t a novelist, but a picture book writer. There is something for you, too. Created by Author Tara Lazar, the challenge is to create 30 picture book ideas in 30 days. You know that a high word count is not the measure of a great picture book (often the opposite is true), so great ideas are more important. Develop characters, titles and flesh out basic plot ideas. The goal is not to complete 30 manuscripts, but create the ideas.

Maybe you don’t have time write 2,000 words a day or maybe writing a novel isn’t your goal. Here is the fat-free version of NaNoWriMo. Hosted by the Written Remains Writers Guild in Delaware, the goal of MiniWriMo is to write 250 words a day for 30 days. Take a writing challenge that doesn’t overwhelm you or totally stress you out. But, it is challenging!

Each group has a community to cheer you on and words to inspire you when it gets hard. So much of writing is a lonely pursuit. It’s good to know you aren’t alone. Read more and register to be part of the excitement. Don’t be left out! This is your year!
